Tour Kebudayaan Kokos (Cocos Cultural Tours) has been very popular with the community and visitors to the islands. The tour begins with the students proudly guiding visitors around the island in the school bus where they stop at significant interest points and present prepared talks. The visitors also take a guided walk through the Kampong stopping to sample garden fruit and to chat to islanders.
Next a short video allows visitors to learn about the Cocos history whilst our hosts offer a traditional snack of curry puffs, which is then washed down by chilled coconut milk. The tour continues with the students taking visitors around their school where they have the opportunity to witness the students' Neneks (grandparents) working with groups of children on a range of different cultural activities. At each station the working group present a talk in English about what they are doing and learning. The array of activities range from traditional dancing and music to crafts using local resources, food gardening and story telling. Enterprise is further fostered through students running a shop. Here they sell cultural crafts and local produce to the tourists. Students learn about customer service and money handling.
After many photos and questions the tour group finishes at a house in the community. Here students are learning to cook the traditional way. After more food sampling the Visitor’s Book is signed and donations are collected. Generosity is fostered by the students when making whole school decisions on how they will spend the money. Lately they chose to donate the money to the local mosque refurbishments and to the school's World Vision sponsored child. Our students are very proud of their Cultural Tours Program and they appreciate the support their Neneks (Grandparents) have provided, ensuring its success. Speaking English well and having a purpose to speak; valuing the Cocos-Malay culture; developing pride and confidence; gaining skill with enterprise; and learning about the world outside of Cocos are all important priorities for the school and community. The teaching staff, in collaboration with the community, introduced this new innovative project to address these five very important areas. The Tour is a must do when you're on Cocos. In 2005, the school won the National Society for Provision of Education to Rural Australia (SPERA) Award - Tour Kebudayaan was judged as the best educational programme in rural Australia.
