Because many of our students regularly travel on the eight
kilometre ferry trip across the lagoon, our crisis management plan includes an annual
evacuation drill that takes place on the water. All students from year three and
upwards board the ferry after practising donning the lifejackets.
Once on the
ferry, the operators fire a flare gun which creates a lot of smoke. Students put
on the lifejackets, then are led through the ferry cabin to the bow. They jump
into the lagoon with teachers and teacher assistants, and swim to shore assisted
by staff. Students in year two and under remain on the jetty to watch the
process, and look forward to the time when they are old enough to make the jump.
