Cocos Islands are a unique environment; culturally, physically and educationally. For 85% of students, English is a second language. Bilingual classes on the Home Island primary campus cater for the special language needs of the Cocos Malay students. A strong cross-cultural commitment and use of English as Second Language strategies are features of school programs on both campuses. The Integration Program is an excellent initiative in meeting school priorities, providing a purpose for students from Home Island Campus to practise speaking English whilst fostering an inclusive learning environment for the culturally different students from the two campuses. It also assists the year six students with their transition into high school, allows Home Island students to utilise West Island Campus resources and it adds spice to the weekly routine for everyone. Mondays sees the Year 4/5 Home Island students travelling the 8km lagoon to join with their Year 3-6 West Island peers for a full day of integrated programs. The collaborative programs include sport, T & E in the high school workshop, the Virtues Project, integrated learning projects, language and maths board games and intensive language activities. The students mix and socialise during lunchtime and friendships have developed. A similar program is run in the junior classes.
